Declared as an annual public holiday in Singapore since 1929, it is likely to continue being celebrated. Although Deepavali is a Hindu festival, non-Hindus are also able to enjoy public festivities such as the Little India light-up.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Deepavali, or Diwali, is a festival that falls on 24<sup>th<\/sup> October 2022. The word Deepavali itself translates to \u201ca row of lights\u201d and is conjugation of\u00a0dipa\u00a0meaning \u201clamp\u201d or \u201clight,\u201d and\u00a0avail\u00a0meaning \u201crow\u201d, referencing the tradition of lighting lamps in the evening of the festival. It is hence known as the \u201cFestival of Lights\u201d. While there are numerous variations in the celebration of Deepavali, and various mythological traditions associated with it, the festival is largely seen to symbolise the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>During Deepavali, the doorways of homes are decorated with\u00a0diyas\u00a0(small clay oil lamps) and\u00a0rangoli\u00a0(also known as\u00a0kolam) &#8211; intricate patterns made from coloured rice powder or rice grains. Lighted\u00a0diyas\u00a0are placed at doorways to draw auspicious energies into the home. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The lighting of oil lamps also signifies the triumph of good over evil.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Little India, the heart of Singapore\u2019s Indian community, is the focal point for festive shopping. Deepavali bazaars selling various ethnic wear, festive decorations and snacks are held along Little India.
