The festival, whose name comes from the Sanskrit word\u00a0<em>dipavali<\/em>, meaning \u201crow of lights,\u201d serves as a beacon of brightness every year, celebrating the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.<\/p>\n<p>It is celebrated to honor Lord Rama (incarnation of Lord Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Lord Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses with diyas (clay oil lamps) to celebrate his victory over evil (light over darkness).<\/p>\n<p>This year Deepavali falls on 4th of Nov 2021. It is generally a time for visiting, exchanging gifts, wearing new clothes, feasting, feeding the poor, and setting off fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>During the festival,\u00a0<em>diya<\/em>s are lit and placed in rows along the parapets of temples and houses and set adrift on rivers and streams.
